Hymn Contest Winners!
Dear friends and fellow singers,
Thank you to each one who submitted a hymn tune for the 2014 SCMC hymn search! We received 44 tunes to James Troyer’s text, “The World Lay Languishing.” As in previous years, it was a challenge choosing among the strong entries.
It’s encouraging to see composing talent coming to life from all around the country.
Congratulations to Reed West of Fairmont, WV, for writing the winning composition. Reed is 19 years old and is currently studying piano pedagogy at Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC. He attends Fellowship Baptist Church where his father is the music minister.
The new hymn, “The World Lay Languishing” to the tune FAIRMONT, will be presented in June at the 2014 Shenandoah Christian Music Camp. At that time we will also send all contestants a copy of the hymn. We realize everyone is curious to see the winning composition, but SCMC prefers to present it at camp as a new piece. Thank you for your patience.
We also give special recognition to the pieces we considered in the final round of sorting. The following composers contributed tunes worthy of honorable mention: Lamar Stoltzfus, Ivan Martin, Lynn S. Martin, Seth Martin, Gary Yoder.
We looked for freshness (melodic boldness, rhythmic interest), congregational suitability, and technical competence. Do share your compositions with others; God will still use them to bless others even if they weren’t chosen in this hymn search.
God bless each of you with more songs for the Kingdom. Worthy is the Lamb!SCMC Hymn Committee
